(500) Days of Summer is One of The Best Films of 2009

The other day, I had a few pennies in my pocket, so I checked out (500) Days of Summer.

The film has been out for a while and should be ready to go to DVD soon, but from very first frame, this clearly one of my favorite films of 2009, if not of the decade.

This is not your usual "boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy loses girl, boy holds boom box on the top of the Empire State building to get girl back" kind of film.

A traditional romantic comedy this is not.

In some ways, "(500) Days" is like a faux documentary with a hint of Woodie Allen's "Annie Hall", as we follow the love affair between fictional characters Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Dechanel).

First time director Marc Webb use of flash forwarding and going backward to tell their story is pretty smart (the film begins on day "488", goes back to day "1" and zig-zags like an episode of "Lost" and ultimately ends on day "500")

I agree with famed film critic Roger Ebert who says that when we think about our past loves, we don't think about it in chronological order, because it is always jumbled and depending on our mood or how the relationship ended, we either focus on the very good or the very bad.

However, the centerpiece of the film (outside of the dance number) is the split screen scene.

I won't spoil it for you, but for any person who is deeply in love with another, the expectations that we have are at times are very different from what reality actually tell us.

As I watched the film, I saw a lot (maybe too much) of myself in Joesph Gordon Levitt's Tom, a greeting card writer who believes that Summer is the only girl for him.

Gordon-Levitt's approach as the lovestruck Tom is a throwback of sorts.

He's not a bumbling, romantic like Hugh Grant or a suave, smooth talking player like George Clooney, Tom is like most of us, a regular guy who is trying to find his place in the world, while trying to find someone who truly understands him.

Tom thinks that he found that woman in Summer.

Looking like an early 70's version of Linda Rondstadt with a pinch of Katy Perry, Zooey Deschanel plays a character who is not bitchy or mean, but one who is fun loving, but also not the hopeless romantic like Tom, (even though her displays of affection says otherwise).

Although Summer is very honest with Tom about her feelings, Tom chooses to hear what he wants to hear (and see).

It's a shame that "(500) Days of Summer" has not been a blockbuster hit, (it has only made $31.6 million since its July 17th release, however with a budget of only $7.5 million, "(500) Days" has made a profit)

But like Summer, maybe the film is too honest for film goers who still believe that four acts are the best way to find love on the silver screen.

I hope "(500) Days" will get some love during Oscar time and maybe then more people will embrace the film on DVD, like I did during a bargain day at a movie theater in Akron, Ohio.

CNN's Rick Sanchez Makes The Moves on TruTV's Ashleigh Banfield

Good job Rick! Personally I probably would have tried same player move on Ms. Banfield too...if I was at a club?!?!? I don't know about you, but something tells me Walter Cronkite wouldn't have done that...welcome to 21st century news folks.

Glenn Beck refuses to define 'white culture' (video)

From Hollywood Reporter

A hilariously awkward moment in CBS News' Katie Couric's interview with Fox News' Glenn Beck where she gently, insistently kept asking Beck to explain exactly what he meant by "white culture" (from when he said Barack Obama has a "deep-seated hatred for white culture"). The scene plays a bit like Steve Carell's Michael Scott in "The Office" when he's put on the spot about some over-the-top statement. That the question is from a Twitter user makes it even better.

Ghost Whisper star Jennifer Love Hewitt's flaunts her new figure on Craig Ferguson.

VH1 Behind the Music: Bobby Brown

With the debuts of Grey's Anatomy, CSI, The Mentalist and Rush Limbaugh on Jay Leno, many of you might have missed Bobby Brown's "Behind The Music" on VH1.

For many of us who grew up watching New Edition, the show was good microcosm of Brown's talent, ego and ultmate addiction to drugs.

However, compared to Whitney Houton's interview with Oprah, Brown came across as person who is working hard to amend the mistakes of his past and to become a better person everyday.

This is not to say Houston isn't, but while people are praising Whitney's comeback as an artist, Bobby Brown seems to be few steps ahead as a recovering addict, not an artist...and that should be mean more to the public than selling a bunch of CDs.

Who am I to give advice to 19 year old Soulja Boy on his alleged engagement to 25 year old model Rosa Acosta.

I just hope someone in his camp told him about pre-nups.

Glee Season 1 : Ep. 4 "Preggers"

Who watched Glee last night besides me? The show centered around Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video. Although Kanye was wrong jumping on the stage at the MTV Awards (and he's current ticket sales atest to that) , he was right about the video's influence on pop culture.

Artist to Watch: Diane Birch-Nothing But a Miracle

For the past few years, some of the most soulful singers has come from the UK (Amy Winehouse, Estelle, Adele, Duffy), but Michigan's Diane Birch with her Carol King type vocals and early 70's vibe, (which is due in part to soul legend Betty Wright who worked on her album "Rewind"), Ms. Birch is by far one of my favorite artists of 2009.

Guys, you know that hot chick you see at Starbuck's that you don't think you can get? Think again!

If you really listen to Megan Fox during her interview with Conan O'Brien, she's basically telling you don't have to be George Clooney or Taye Diggs to have a shot with her,(she loves Red Lobster for goodness sake!!!)

Sure, you might not get Megan Fox, but Becky in accounting, she's all yours.

Entourage Music: Piece of Clay by Marvin Gaye

The Gospel-ish sounding tune heard at the the of Entourage's latest episode "Security Briefs" was "Piece of Clay" by Marvin Gaye's. T

he is a song about the struggle for self identity and the way we treat one another, which is poignant as Lloyd left Ari Gold sitting in his office by himself at the end of the episode.

Lyrics:

Father stop
Criticizing your son
Mother please
Leave your daughters alone
Don't you see that's what wrong
With the world with world today
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay

We all talk of kindness
But it's only only a word
Brother turned on a sister
In this cruel cruel world today
That's what's wrong
With all in this world today
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
Somebody to play with
Wanna to mold you, mold you
Shape you like they wanna
Wanna to do their thing

Children are told
To give not just to take
If we were all children
You know the world
Will be a better place
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
We should all love each other
Love and take one another
We should love each other
Love and not hate, oh

Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay
True everybody wants somebody
To mold them, shape them own way
Everybody wants somebody
Try to make it
Or do their, do their thing
Everybody wants take somebody
Got to make it do their thing
Everybody wants somebody
To be their own piece of clay

Kanye West's Apology on the Jay Leno Show

Prior to his booking on Jay Leno's new show, the only thing Kanye West had to do was perform along Rhianna and headliner Jay-Z. But after the Taylor Swift fiasco, West became Leno's new Hugh Grant (When Leno first took over the Tonight Show, Actor Hugh Grant was busted with prostitute and his interview which launched Leno's ratings dominance over David Letterman).

Its good that West is already out there apologizing. Sure some people will say that his being fake, but at least his doing something.

The best thing West said that he needed to take some time off. I think that's a good idea. He is supposed to start a tour with Lady Gaga in October, but judging by the amount of hate directed towards him from not just the public, but also the industry, so it might be best that Ye take some time off, regroup and maybe go into therapy.

Vibe Magazine Finds Lost Tupac Shakur Interview From 1996

Throwback: ODB Pulls A Kanye At The Grammy's

At this point, both Chris Brown and R. Kelly are getting more love than Kanye West, following VMA debacle.

But let's go back to a simpler time, back in the 90's when Wu-Tang Clan's ODB jacked the mic from Shawn Colvin during the Grammy's.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Trailer

I'm more of a "True Blood" guy than a Twilight fan, but after watching the the trailer for "New Moon" during the VMA's, I might check it out.

Hot! New Janet Jackson Single "Make Me"

After her performance last night to honor her brother at the VMA's , Janet Jackson dropped a new single online called "Make Me" which is very reminiscent of some of her classic work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Kanye West Aplogizes to Taylor Swift on his Blog

Kanye West, A bloody Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift @ 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

Kanye West was wrong to bum rush Taylor Swift on Stage at the the VMA's, but to be honest, when she won best female video, I said WHAT? Not only did Swift beat out Beyonce, but she also leapfrogged over Pink and Lady Gaga. West will catch heat for a long time for dissing country princess Swift, but this also says that MTV awards is now just as political as the Grammy's .

The only real disappointment was that Russell Brand really didn't bring anything to the table. He's usually pretty funny on talk shows, but when it comes the VMA's he has more misses than hits.

Psst...., just between you and mean, MTV probably loves the controversy. Its been a while since VMA's had something that made headlines the next day. So even though publicly the former video channel is pro-Tayor Swift, in actuality, they are ecstatic that people will be tuning into the repeats of the award show.)

Other moments @ 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

Michael Jackson Tribute

Before all heck broke loose, Madonna made a moving speech about her friendship with Michael Jackson, followed by a stellar dance routine of some of Jackson's best moves. Janet Jackson ended things by dancing with her brother with video remix of their hit "Scream".

Lady Gaga-Paparazzi

If there was an artist that is few decades late it is Lady Gaga. Showing the the type of theatrics that would've made David Bowie, Freddy Mercury , Bette Midler and Rocky Horror picture show fans proud, Gaga is a throwback when 1970 performances were built on theatrics, strong singing and drama and not just dance steps, auto tunes and pyrotechnics.

Pink-Sober

Flying in the air with the greatest of ease, Pink twirled around the MTV audience with death defying skill. Its a shame, she really receives her due as a fantastic artist.

Beyonce -Single Ladies

Its the land of the "Single Ladies"! Campy, but fun, Beyonce stretched out her hit single ladies into a chorus line of lovely ladies telling guys to "Put a Ring on it".

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind

B's husband popped up with Ms. Keys and performed a crowd pleasing performance of Empire State of Mind (New York). Um, where did Lil Mama come from?

Beyonce & Taylor

After winning award for "Video of Year", Beyonce brings up Taylor Swift to finished her acceptance which was interrupted by West. The interesting thing is that MTV could have done this earlier by letting Swift finish the speech after the West incident. But instead they MTV cut to a commercial.

Michael Jordan's Basketball 2009 Hall of Fame Footage

The striking thing about Michael Jordan's speech is the intensity he still showed going into the Hall of Fame.

He kept using the phrase "Wood to the Fire" to tell everyone what events propelled him into the becoming the greatest NBA player of his generation, if not of all time.

Being that I'm in Akron, Ohi, I see this same type of intensity and confidence when I hear Cleveland Cav's Lebron James speaks.

To be the best in anything, you have to have an unwavering belief in yourself in the the good times and the bad.

MJ's belief in his self, solid coaching from Phil Jackson (& Tex Winter) and sheer will to push his teammates to their max potential is what propelled the Chicago Bulls to six championships.

Jay-Z not only wants the New Jersey Nets to move to Brooklyn by the end of next year, but he also would like for his good friend LeBron James to join the team.

Movie Trailer: Black Dynamite

For about two decade's Kennan Ivory Wayans 'I"m Gonna Get You Suck"a was the standard for blaxpoitation parody movies. But now there is some competition.

"Black Dynamite" starring Michael Jai White (Spawn) takes different spin the blaxploitation era, by presenting the flick as a lost film from the 1970's.

Judging by the trailer, this flick (which was fan favorite at Sundance Film Festival) might be the surprise hit of the fall.

Jamie Foxx - Digital Girl (Remix) (feat. Drake, The-Dream & Kanye West)

Following the major success of "Blame It" , Jamie Foxx stumbled a bit when the Timbaland produced "I Don't Need It" failed to catch on.

The Oscar winner gets back on the winning track with the "Digital Girl" remix featuring Drake, The Dream and Kanye West.

Directed by Hype Williams, "Digital Girl" is light years ahead Ready For The World's old school video "Digital Display"; but come on, who still doesn't love a little RFTW?!!

Janet Janet's First Interview Since Michael's Death: The Harpar Bazaar Interview

Janet Jackson gives her first interview since her brother's Michael's death in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar

On MJ:

"He loved to laugh. The last time we were together, he'd laugh so hard, he would just start crying. Sometimes his humor would be corny, sometimes dry. He loved the Three Stooges, he loved slapstick, he loved Eddie Murphy in his silly comedies. He loved to have fun. He loved to play." If Janet had one more day with her brother (whose nickname for her, incidentally, was Dunk), she would "relive that moment we had when we were kids, do our little run: We'd wake up, feed the animals, spend the entire day together."

Janet talks about dating since breaking up with Jermaine Dupri:

Does she still believe in marriage? "For [some] people, sure! I don't know if I'll get married again. [She's been married twice, as a teen to James DeBarge and to choreographer René Elizondo.] I'll put it like this: If God wants me to, then I will." Dating? "Yeah, I've had people ask me out. I haven't entertained any offers thus far, but I'm locking myself in my work right now." Some might say boys smell anyway. "Yeah, they stink," she chuckles, "and they're dirty."

President Obama's Back-to-School Speech: The Prepared Text

The whole Barack Obama talking to school kids in Texas "controversy" is just plain silly. Below is the prepared text for President Obama's speech. Interestingly enough there was nothing in there about socialism, but rather stay in school and work hard.

I'm not sure what's happening to this country, but when a President of The United States is being criticized for speaking to classroom full of children, we are taking a ugly turn in the 21st century.

Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama
Back to School Event
Arlington, Virginia
September 8, 2009

The President: Hello everyone – how's everybody doing today? I'm here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I'm glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could've stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday – at 4:30 in the morning.
Now I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I'd complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."

So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I'm here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I'm here because I want to talk with you about your education and what's expected of all of you in this new school year.

Video: Maia Campbell Flipping Out

Today on the Internet, video surfaced as Maia Campbell who played Tiffany Warren from LL Cool J's 90's sitcom "In The House acting irrational.

Hard Knocks: Chad Ocho Cinco on How To Pick up Women

Last night on HBO's "Hard Knocks" Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco (Johnson) told the story how he picked up his girlfriend Maya.
Watch the video HERE- Transcript below:

Chad: This is how we met, New Orleans, All-Star Weekend, and all of a sudden I hear this girl out of nowhere be like excuse me, are you, what's your name? And I give her that look like, psst.

Maya: No, that's not what happened... No it wasn't. You chased me.
(Chad puts hits hands together in a T.)

Maya: Timeout? You chased me.

Chad: Time. Pause.

Maya: You didn't got on a wheel chair and pretend you were a cripple so you could sit next to me at the airplane? And then, as soon as you got on the airplane, you said, "Ah, Jesus thank you, I'm saved, it's a miracle, I can walk." You didn't say that?

Chad: That's not how it happened. Man, for real, people y'all know me--
Maya: And then, while I was sleeping...

Chad: Excuse me--

Maya: ...You took my phone and dialed your number and then I didn't even know and then you put on your earphones on and didn't hear anything I said because you already got my number.

Chad: Anyway, for the men, this is a new way how to get phone numbers now so you don't have to deal with rejection/ You take the women's phone, you ask to borrow it, you tell her your phone is dead at that present time, you dial your number with her phone and you just call her later on or text her. It might be some kind of stalker-ish stuff but it helps with the rejection process, you don't have to deal with being turned down. As in my case I did that, and now I can't---

Maya: Get rid of me?

Chad: Get rid of you. Can we go work out please?

Now Chad's way of avoiding rejection is a bit stalker-ish, but if I am on plane and meet a woman like Maya, I might have give that phone trick a try.
I might get flown off the plane for taking woman's phone, but its worth a try right?

New Ryan Leslie - You're Not My Girl

I came across this track while Ryan Lieslie appeared on Tim Westwood's Radio1 Xtra show. The Michael Jackson-ish track reminds me of the Neptunes work with Justin Timberlake.
