GQ 2012: D'Angelo Returns and Plugs in (Video)

"...The massive weight gain didn't make Michael "D'Angelo" Archer see the darkness that was looming. Neither did the hermit-like isolation, the shattered friendships, the years wasted without a new record in sight, or even the car accident that nearly killed him. By the time he careened off a lonely stretch of road near Richmond, Virginia, in September 2005, hitting a fence and rolling his Hummer three times, he'd already failed two stints in rehab—including one where his counselor was Bob Forrest, the guy on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Bob had been cool, D'Angelo says, but his message of sobriety didn't take. "I went in under a fake name so people wouldn't know who I was, right?" D'Angelo tells me, in his first sit-down interview in twelve years. "So, you know, Michael never got treatment. It was this other character that was in there. And the moment I left, I went straight to the fucking liquor store."

Lolo Jones Says She Will Be Virgin Until Her Wedding Night

"...."It's just something, a gift that I want to give to my husband.""But please understand this journey has been hard. If there's virgins out there, I just want to let them know, it's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage."

"....I've been tempted. I've had guys tell me, they're like, 'Hey you know if you have sex it will help you run faster.'" She joked that her response has been: "If you marry me, then yeah."

Lupe Fiasco New Track Samples T.R.OY....Pete Rock Not Too Happy on Twitter

Late this evening Lupe Fiasco dropped a new single,"Around My Way [Freedom Ain't Free]".

The hard hitting single has quickly become a favorite of Lupe fans whom have been waiting for new music since "Lasers".

Unfortunately, one person who is not pleased is producer Pete Rock for whom Lupe sampled Rock's classic track with C.L. Smooth "The Reminisce Over You.

Here's some of Pete Rock's thoughts from Twitter"

TheRealPeteRock ‏@PeteRock

No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made

This business can be so lame, sometimes I make beats blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back and still these cats can't be original to

Who ever Re-created that didn't do a good job @ all. #nohate

Man I'm a lupe fan and everything but TROY was my homie man. I think about him and Hev every fucking day!!!! Smh

It's so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP?

Pete Rock's rant went on for a while but then he said:

And y'all need to stop the childish games, I'm a fan of lupe and he is a great artist and a great person.

But dude, you're the one who started with the rant in the first place.

Its like when you have friend you hates their spouse, but when you say how horrible that person is they say, "hey man you can't say that"....what??? But I feel Pete Rock.

T.R.O.Y is one the greatest hip hop songs of all time, so I can only imagine how he feels when someone jacks it.

What do you think?

Do you think Pete Rock had a right to gripe?

How did you like Lupe's new track and finally do you agree with some Twitter folks who say Lupe's track allows younger fans to hear a sample that otherwise they might now have ever heard, just like how Pete Rock used to sample horns back in the day?

Conan O'Brien and David Letterman Discuss Their Jay Leno Experiences on Late Night

\

Washington Redskins Robert Griffin III (RG3) On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Washington Post: "Chuck Brown, go-go legend, dies"

"...A piece of D.C. history, an establishment, a legacy, a godfather and musical impresario passed away Wednesday. Nationally loved, local legend Chuck Brown lost his fight with pneumonia at the age of 75 and with him goes a Washington that will never be the same. My first experience with Chuck Brown was as a third grader, but it wouldn’t be my last as he was a constant in an ever-changing landscape. He was a bridge between African musical traditions- a D.C. I would never know- and one that I grew up in.

The classic “Run Joe” wasn’t just a song, it was a dance and T-shirt. It was a cultural movement and a testament to those making money outside of the law. It was “**** the Police” before NWA. It was coded song, and call and response that traces back to an ancestry that was there before slavery. It was as political as it was a cautionary tale and above all else a party song and it was everything that Chuck Brown would be known for in a city that can remember when D.C. wasn’t the DMV.

What is lost today is a musical history that can be traced back to D.C.’s early jazz roots and the problem with trying to classify his death in a musical context is that the only counterparts of a cultural magnitude are the American mainstream. So he wasn’t the Beatles or Elvis or Johnny Cash. He was Chuck. One word. One name. One man that can never been duplicated.

New York Times: The Queen of Disco, Who Transcended the Era

Donna Summer, the multimillion-selling singer and songwriter whose hits captured both the giddy hedonism of the 1970s disco era and the feisty female solidarity of the early 1980s, died on Thursday at her home in Naples, Fla. She was 63.
The cause was cancer, her publicist, Brian Edwards, said.

With her doe eyes, cascade of hair and sinuous dance moves, Ms. Summer became the queen of disco — the music’s glamorous public face — as well as an idol with a substantial gay following. Her voice, airy and ethereal or brightly assertive, sailed over dance floors and leapt from radios from the mid-’70s well into the ’80s.

She riffled through styles as diverse as funk, electronica, rock and torch song as she piled up 14 Top 10 singles in the United States, among them “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff,” “Last Dance” and “She Works Hard for the Money.” In the late ’70s she had three double albums in a row that reached No. 1, and each sold more than a million copies.

...LaDonna Adrian Gaines was born Dec. 31, 1948, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, one of seven children. She grew up singing in church and decided in her teens to make music her career. In the late 1960s she joined the Munich company of the rock musical “Hair” and relocated to Germany, where she became fluent in German and worked as a studio vocalist, in musical theater and briefly as a member of the Viennese Folk Opera. She married an Austrian actor, Hellmuth Sommer, in 1972, and after they divorced she kept his name but changed the spelling. She had already recorded her first single under the name Donna Gaines, an unsuccessful remake in 1971 of the Jaynetts’ “Sally Go ’Round the Roses.”

Her work as a backup singer brought her to the attention of Mr. Moroder and Mr. Bellotte. Her 1974 debut album with them, “Lady of the Night,” was released only in Europe. But with “Love to Love You Baby” in 1975, Ms. Summer became a sensation. She said she recorded that song’s breathy, moaning vocals lying on her back on the studio floor with the lights out, thinking about how Marilyn Monroe might coo its words.

The American label Casablanca signed her after hearing the song in its initial European version, titled “Love to Love You,” and asked her to extend it for disco play. The resulting 17-minute single contains more than 20 simulated orgasms and became an international hit, reaching No. 2 on the American pop chart. Ms. Summer quickly released two more albums, “A Love Trilogy” and “Four Seasons of Love,” a concept album tracing a romance over the course of a year.

But she was increasingly uncomfortable being promoted as a sex goddess. “I’m not just sex, sex, sex,” she told Ebony magazine in 1977. “I would never want to be a one-dimensional person like that.”

Upadate:  3/25/2013: Prayers for Roger

(Via Facebook)

"Many of you have been asking for an update on Roger. He seems to be doing well physically... but no significant improvements in terms of him knowing his family or friends or anything about his life. His mom just visited him and she said he did not know or recognize her. He also seems to be having difficulty knowing males from females, even if you give him the names. So, for instance, at night I'll say, "do you want to talk to Siena?" He'll sometimes say "no, Who's he?" We were just with friends in New York for the weekend and we put Roger on speaker phone so we could all talk to him and say goodnight. I know our friends were deeply saddened hearing Roger speak. It sounds like Roger, but it's just not. There's a lot of confusion and words just strung together that have no meaning. It just breaks your heart to hear him talk. As I've said many times in past posts... it is just so hard to process. For me, for our children, for our family and for our friends. As one of Roger's doctors recently told me, "You lost Roger on April 27 the day of the accident. He is and will never be the man you all knew." Yes, tough but realistic words that sometimes family members need to hear. Is there still HOPE? Of course so... and thank God we have such wonderful memories. Just yesterday, for the first time since the accident, we looked at video of Roger from before the accident. He was being his usual funny self.... it made us laugh... and it brought us to tears. We miss that Roger so very much... more than I will ever be able to put to words. But, we are thankful that we still have the "physical" Roger to see and hug. The last few weeks, we've had the difficult task of starting to look at long term facilities. Roger is just not at a level where he could be home. He needs constant supervision and medically still has many issues that are way beyond what we could take care of here. It's heartbreaking and sad to begin this search... as many of you know and have had to do with your loved ones. We are getting close to the year mark of the initial accident... it's hard to believe... but on the other hand, it seems like a lifetime. I thank all of you for your constant support, prayers and love..... I am SO appreciative of ALL of YOU!!! hugs, stef"

Fox 8′s Stefani Schaefer admitted she had “one of those tougher days” as she stood by her husband, Roger, as he recovers from an April accident.
Roger fell 12 feet off of scaffolding at a construction site.
Watch the video above for Stefani’s update.
She also posts on her Facebook fan page.
Keep checking FOX8.com and Stefani’s Facebook fan page for further updates, and please, if you are able, continue to pray for Roger.

(Original story from Fox 8)

"Fox 8 News In The Morning co-host Stefani Schaefer, on Wednesday, visited the Fox 8 set for the first time since her husband Roger was seriously injured in a terrible construction accident nearly three weeks ago. She thanked everyone for their prayers, which she said are definitely working.

Stefani said the accident was so bad that doctors told her, “The fact that he survived the fall is a true miracle.” Roger beating the odds has Stefani convinced that “prayers are being answered.”

“I see your notes on my Facebook page and the emails that you send and the calls to the station. That’s what carried us through. That literally carried us through this,” Stefani said in a message to the multitude of caring viewers. “I can’t thank you enough for your prayers because they have gotten us to this point. I have my husband, and he is alive.”

She said that some days are better than others, but Roger is “a lover of life” and she can sense he is fighting as hard as he can to overcome this. Doctors have told her to prepare for “months and months of ups and downs.” She said she will do whatever it takes, however long it takes, asking everybody to keep praying if they are able.

“The power of prayer is amazing!” she said. “I am seeing miracles every single day with my husband.”

One such miracle happened when a friend asked Roger to give Stefani a sign that he was fighting. She asked him to open his eyes, something Stefani thought was impossible at such an early stage in the recovery process.

“He popped those eyes open,” she said with continued amazement. “It was unbelievable. We were screaming and crying. He was tracking us. It was unbelievable.”

Stefani also announced that she would be returning to work on Thursday, enabling her to save some time off for when Roger begins rehabilitation."

Eulogy to The Beastie Boys Adam Yauch (RIP MCA)

When I awoke to the news that Adam Yauch aka MCA died this morning, I was in disbelief.

Yet another icon from my "Wonder Years" of the 1980s is now gone.

Yauch's death like Heavy D has had a greater effect me now than when I was younger.

When 2Pac, Kurt Cobain and Biggie Smalls died in my 20's, it really sucked because I was a fan of their music and I felt like a part of my musically soul passed away as well.

But their deaths were part of horrible situations:

Big and Pac were shot and Cobain killed himself.

When Aaliyah and Lefteye died in my 30's, I felt the same musical loss but once again, both of these talented performers died tragically in a crashes, one  in a plane and another in a car.

When Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston passed, the loss was further deepened, but due to their misuse of prescription and hard drugs, the feeling was that they might have lived if they only could have saved themselves.

However, Yauch's death by Cancer and Heavy D's by a heart failure were different.

Both died of natural causes.

Not by a gun, a crash or drugs, but they died naturally which is the scariest of all.

When you are younger, you think you and your friends and family will be around forever.

That myth went away when my mom passed away during my adulthood.

When my mom died, I forever knew tomorrow was no longer promised and we have no idea when it will be time our time to go.

Adam Yauch's death further reinforced my thoughts of imortality because  I am at an age where more of the people I grew up listening will soon pass away  as will my friends, more family members and one day myself.

Although Adam Yauch died too young at a ripe age of 47, how many of us can say that we have left a legacy behind?

This is not say that you need do some extreme skiing or try to become the next Steve Jobs (although there is nothing wrong with that) but we should embrace everyday to make ourselves and our surroundings abetter:

So try new things.
Make new friends.
Eat new dishes
Visit new places.
Trying a new career.

Pushing yourself find out who we really are; just like Adam Yauch did going from a frat boy rapper to a person who not only cared about the world, but also leaving behind a musical legacy that led him and fellow Beasties to the Rock and Roll of Fame and Hip Hop Honors.

I know trying live life to fullest everyday is not easiest thing to do and far often we yet the complexities of life overtake our dreams and goals of grandest life....but the best way you can live a life like Adam Yauch is Strive To Become A Better You.

Fire Damages Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta (Video)

By MYFOXATLANTA STAFF/myfoxatlanta

ATLANTA - It took several hours and more than 100 firefighters to bring a massive fire at Tyler Perry's studios in southwest Atlanta under control on Tuesday night.
The fire Tuesday night at the 3100 block of Continental Colony Parkway in southwest Atlanta reached four alarms.

There were no reports of injuries, according to Atlanta Fire Department Capt. J. L. Bundrige.
According to the studio website, the sprawling 200,000 square feet facility features five sound stages, a post-production facility, a back lot, a 400-seat theater, a private screening room and designated areas for entertaining and hosting events. It was moved to its current location in 2008.
Fire trucks circled what appeared to be the Ruby Dee-Ossie Davis studio, the Cicely Tyson studio and the Sidney Poitier studio.

....Brown says he never used hard drugs before meeting Houston, and said that she had used drugs before they were involved. "I worried about it when ... we first got together until I tried it," he said. "And when I tried it, for some reason, I have an addictive personality.

..."My fiancee knows how I felt about that woman," Brown said. "My kids know how I feel ... how I felt about Whitney. It's not a secret, you know? I was in love with her deeply."

..."Brown has four other children, and three of them joined him on TODAY to defend him from his "bad boy" reputation, especially in regards to his decision to walk out of Houston's funeral because he was unwilling to be separated from his alleged "entourage."

"We were the entourage," daughter LaPrincia said, setting the record straight.

"They sat us and you know, I saw someone talk to my dad," Brown's son, Landon, explained. "But I didn't know what they were saying -- until he tapped me and said, 'Let's go.'"

Video: Details emerge about Houston's final days

According to Brown, he only delivered that message after security approached him three times and asked him to seat his "entourage" elsewhere.

"I decided that, you know, it'd be best if I just left," he said. "I kissed the casket, and me and my children left the building."

Since then, Brown hasn't been in touch with Houston's family, though he said he has attempted to reach out to the singer's mother, Cissy Houston, without success."

Deadspin "Is An ESPN Columnist Scamming People On The Internet? "

(Via Deadspin)

"A few weeks ago, ESPN columnist Sarah Phillips concluded her weekly "Junk Mail" column with a question from an unnamed reader:
Rumor has it "Sarah Phillips" isn't a real person and this column is being produced by a ghost writer. Is this true?
Phillips responded:
I'm flattered to join the ranks of Barack Obama, Elvis Presley, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Tupac Shakur as the subject of a great American conspiracy theory! (I would have added Biggie Smalls to the list, but I'm westside 'til I die.) In any event, I'm either an alien life form brought to Earth to keep track of Jose Canseco, or I'm a woman named Sarah Phillips who writes sports-related columns and blogs. You decide. In the meantime ... taaake meee tooo yooour leeeadeeer.
Is Sarah Phillips for real? Thirteen months ago, she was an unknown message-board participant at Covers.com, a gambling website. Then Covers plucked her from the boards and gave her a weekly column, sight unseen. Five months after that, she was tapped by Lynn Hoppes, an editor for ESPN.com, to write a weekly column for ESPN's Page 2—once the home of writers like David Halberstam, Ralph Wiley, and Hunter S. Thompson, and which has now been rebranded as ESPN's Playbook. The swiftness of her ascent gave her that weird sort of internet half-celebrity whereby she became moderately famous before anyone really knew who she was."
