On why he directed Beats, Rhymes and Life
For the last 10 or 12 years I wanted to direct a movie. I always thought it would be in the form of a narrative film, but I’ve always been a fan of documentary filmmaking. And the idea came along to do a story about A Tribe Called Quest about 10 years ago just when I saw them. You know, when they broke up in 1998, it felt like my parents were getting divorced. A Tribe Called Quest meant that much to me. They meant that much to the fans. I always asked them, “Will you guys make more music?” And that question corresponds to why I wanted to do a documentary about A Tribe Called Quest.
