Watch: "This Is Myspace" Commercial 2013 with Pharrell & Mac Miller
So there I was watching halftime of the NBA Finals game between then San Antonio Spurs, when out of the blue, I see a MySpace commercial with N.E.R.D, Mac Miller and a cast of thousands (featuring the song "Mallrats (La La La)" by The Orwells).
Now if this was 2008 and I saw Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo in a MySpace commercial, I would have said that's pretty cool. In 2013, all I said was....hmmm, interesting.
Which is not a bad thing.
After launching their their redesigned site earleir this week and now a TV commercial, MySpace and their new ownership (including Justin Timberlake) are boldly saying: HEY, WE'RE STILL HERE, SO COME AND JOIN US!
Will it work?
Who knows?
When it comes to social media, you never know which social network will be coveted by young adults. Yet, a new slant might for young adults to go old school and embrace MySpace again.
For many young adults who came of age during Facebook, Twitter, Instagram era, MySpace was something their older siblings or even their parents used back in the 2000s.
However, just like the reemergence of vinyl as of late, the coolest thing might actually be for kids to ditch their parents and grandparents on Facebook and dig in the digital crates to see what MySpace fuss was all about.
This may or may not be the digital strategy of MySpace 2.0, but it is one that Mark Zuckerberg and other social networks hope fails .
