French Rockers "Phoenix" Impresses on SNL

Trying to Be Cool

Drakkar Noir

I've love this second song Phoenix performed.  It reminds of the pop urban influenced British bands like KajaGooGoo back in the 80s.

Hammer Time! Psy & M.C. Hammer Goes "2 Legit 2 Style" For AMA Ending!

For a brief few seconds as Psy's "Gangam Style" went dark, I saw a bald headed guy with a bandanna appear behind the Korean superstar.

"Psy brought 2Pac back from the grave," I yelled .

However, it was MC Hammer who delighted the crowd with his "2 Legit Quit" / "Gangnam Style"mash-up and dance with Psy.

In recent years, Hammer's  resurgence is not unlike that of the love hate love track that the Bee Gees went through from the 70's to the 90's:

From influential dancing and music icon in the early 90's to bankrupt punchline during he late 90's to a respectable music, dancing and now technology vet today

The return of Stanley Burrell  was a great ending to a so-so American Music Awards, where Justin Beiber won Artist of Year; a year in which One Direction,Katy Perry, Rihanna, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Jay-Z & Kanye West clearly had more impact than the Beibs in 2012

Bruno Mars Performs Locked Out of Heaven & Young Wild Girls on SNL

Not since the days of Kool and the Gang and the Con-Funk-Shun ruled the stage in the early 80's, have we seen a group of R&B horn players/back-up singers totally crush a stage, but Bruno Mars and his capable band did just that on Saturday Night Live this weekend. While the energy was high on "Locked Out of Heaven", Mars slowed things down with "Young Wild Girls", which might rival "Grenade" as one of his best written songs.

Frank Ocean Perfroms "Bad Religion" on Jimmy Fallon

About this time a decade ago, if you said that you were shot a bunch of times likes 50 cent, you automatically garnered a lot of press.

My have times change.

When Frank Ocean discussed his sexuality on his Tumblr, his announcement created a new paradigm between artist and audience.

This is not to say that Ocean was hoping that his reveal would give him publicity, but overnight Frank Ocean's name is more topical than it was two weeks ago.

I wonder if more artists will follow suit. Not to reveal that they are gay, but to open themselves up open and honestly?

R&B was like that once, until more of its stars followed the sexual playbook of R. Kelly. However, the one thing that Chris Brown and others dropped was the vulnerable side of Kells.

Here's hoping that Frank Ocean musicality and openness will create a new wave of R&B, where its OK being just who you are.
