Music is My Soul's Top 15 TV Shows of 2013

  1. Breaking Bad (AMC)—“Tread Lightly”, that's all that needs to be said for the final episodes of Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) meth business. Everyone of the final episodes of AMC show felt like “24” at its peak, every single of the last episodes, kept you at the edge of your set (if you watch one episode, check out Walt's "confession")  The final episode, which should be a blueprint on how to wrap up a show (Sorry "Lost", "Dexter", "Weeds" and "The Sopranos.)
  2. The Walking Dead (AMC)—TWD is setting such a high standard each season, it makes you wonder if or when  the show will ever crash and burn.  Even it there is dip next season, the Walking Dead will still be one of the best  shows on TV, even if the Emmy voters snubs them each year.
  3. House of Lie (Showtime)-- Don Cheadle's show isn't getting the same buzz as the first year, the season two became even grittier as loyalties were tested and boundaries were crossed with Marty Kahn (Cheadle) and crew.
  4. Boadwalk Empire (HBO)—While of House of Lies might be getting some buzz, Boardwalk isn't getting any; which is a shame, since Jefferey Wright and Michael K. Williams did some stellar Emmy worthy work this year working against Steve Buscemi and each other.
  5. Mad Men-The 60's is coming closer to a close and so is this classic AMC series as this season Don Draper (John Hamm) found his cheating ways again opposite an Emmy worthy Linda Cardenelli.
  6. The Eric Andre Show (Cartoon Network)—Key and Peele might get more buzz, but Eric Andre and Hannibal Burress' show is the best over the top program since the Chappelle Show.
  7. Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell—FX killed "Biased" when they move the comical, thought provoking show to FXX, thus sending  ratings down, which led to its cancellation. . The Daily Show and John Stewart might be the comedy news darling on TV nowadays, but "Biased" was for folks, who wanted needed more Public Enemy in their news and less smirk.
  8. Hello Ladies (HBO)—If I was lanky duude from Britain, Hello Ladies would be my life. Stephen Merchant, masterfully stepped out his partner Ricky Gervaise's shadow has a hopeless dater living in Hollywood. While some episodes were hard to watch as  Merchan mercifully  failed in dating, that's what makes the show great because "Hello Ladies" is probably more realistic when it comes to dating that most rom-coms.
  9. So You ThinkYou Can Dance (FOX)—The Amazing Race might win the Emmys, but SYTYCD is the best reality show on TV. No gimmicks, no crazy challenges  to win votes, just great music , determination, and wonderful dancing.
  10. 30 for30—The ESPN's series is best going when it comes to sports docs.
  11. Unsug-- The TV One series is the best soing when it comes to R&;B/Hip Hop docs.
  12. True Blood—I don't care if I am the last one watching this show, I still dig these vamps and Sooki.
  13. Grey's Anatomy--Might might be more buzzworthy, but Grey's the past few seasons has been doing some really good shows the past few seasons.
  14. The Good Wife (CBS) Might be the best scripted series on regular TV.
  15. Scandal (ABC)--Slightly overrated, but a great campy show to watch. As long as Kerry Washington is doing the show, I'm watchin!

The Making of No Need For Alarm with Del the Funky Homosapien

(Via Nah Right)

“A Tribe Called Quest was at Jive [back then]. I actually knew Q-Tip at the time, and Jungle Brothers, too. They were definitely an influence. And De La [Soul] too. But lyrically, I was probably drawing more from Kool G Rap, you know what I’m saying? Some exterminators, on the lyrical tip. The first album was more of my personality, whereas the second album was more technical.”

...
“My father was really into music, so he had a lot of stuff. But I really started getting into digging more when I started hanging out with Dante Ross and with Domino. That, and with the Beastie Boys. When I hung out with the Beastie Boys a couple times, and I saw the crazy funk records they were playing, I was like, ‘Man, these whiteboys got all this!’ It tripped me out, like, ‘Man, I gotta explore.’ This was like right before I started doing No Need For Alarm.

“I was with Q-Tip when I went to [the Beastie Boys’] studio. Matter of fact, I did shrooms with Q-Tip, and it was the first time I did shrooms. I was high as hell in the studio, and I had to go to the bathroom, and I thought there was a monster in the bathroom. Then Mike D came down and was like, ‘What’s wrong?’ I was like, ‘Man, I went to the bathroom, and I was trippin’.’ He was like, ‘Man, you need to get you something to eat. Let’s go to the store.’ So he took me to 7-Eleven or some shit, and bought me some Fruit Loops and some milk, and was like, ‘Here, just eat this. You’ve just gotta get something in your stomach.’ That’s how I met them fools.”

Mario Armstrong: "'Blacks In Tech' Series....Let's Keep Talking" #BlacksinTech @MarioArmstrong

I'd like to tell you a story.

In 1999, three years before Friendster, four years before Myspace, and five years before Mark Zuckerberg launched "Thefacebook" from his Harvard dorm room, Omar Wasow founded BlackPlanet. It was one of the first sites on the Internet in a new wave that came to be called "social networks."

As Omar told Complex magazine: "The guys who started Myspace were quoted in Businessweek magazine saying that they looked at BlackPlanet as a model for Myspace and thought there was an opportunity to do a general market version of what BlackPlanet was."

In the years since BlackPlanet launched, Tom Anderson sold Myspace to News Corp. for hundreds of millions. Zuckerberg's Facebook has become a household name, is one of the most heavily visited destinations on the Internet and raised billions during the company's IPO.

But nobody seems to even remember Omar Wasow's name.

How can that be?

Pussy Riot's Nadezhda Tolokonnikova & Maria Alyokhina to be Freed From Jail

(Via USA Today)

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, the jailed members of Russian punk collective Pussy Riot will be freed soon, Reuters reports. Last year, the pair, along with Yekaterina Samutsevich, were found guilty of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" and sentenced them to two years in prison. (Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are still in prison camps, while Samutsevitch was freed last year.)

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina are being freed because of a new amnesty bill, which, according to BBC News, pardons women with young children who have not committed violent crimes.

According to USA Today, the bill allows authorities a six-month period to carry out the amnesty, meaning it could take weeks or months before the two women are released. They are currently sentenced through February.

Totally Biased: Interview with Jim Norton

JB Smoove Shares Some Chocolate with Meredith Vieira on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

W Kamau Bell on The Cancellation of Totally Biased

So… that happened.
Although what DID happen with Totally Biased has happened thousands of times in the history of show business… nay the world. It goes like this. Person gets job. Person works hard at job. Person loses job. My whole career I’ve seen talented comics get opportunities that I thought, “WOW! That is definitely going to be the THING for her!” And then I’ve seen that thing not become the THING. This is just my time for that. I thought Totally Biased was going to be my “THING!” I worked hard to make it so, and it didn’t happen. So now I get the chance to find a new “THING” and to see how that goes. That’s amazing. The show was canceled. I’m not canceled. 99.999% of stand-up comics don’t get this far. If I’m really lucky, what we did on Totally Biased will be remembered long after it stops airing. Heck, my mom is still mad that they canceled Frank’s Place. (Google it. It was great.)
The one thing I truly hope is that whoever the next comic is to be considered for a show doesn’t get judged by my lack of… you know… still having show. I hope John Landgraf and the beautiful people at FX (and FXX) continue to take chances on the underdogs. Their batting average is kind of amazing. I hope this doesn’t bum them out too much.
I am very proud of Totally Biased. The Lindy West / Jim Norton debate was amazing. For the rest of my career I will chase the highs of Sikh vs Sheikh. Hell, I got to talk to Rachel Maddow for nearly TEN MINUTES! I learned I like talking to random people on the street about real things; (I will be more proud of Anything to Say to a White Guy than anything else I do in my career.) Also I got to have one of my heroes, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, write me a theme song. I was able to work closely with the comedy Jedi Chris Rock. And, above it all, I was able to employ some awesome comics with original voices. Many of whom are my friends… and who will hopefully forgive how crazy I have been the last several months.
There are so many people who worked on the show. So many talented people who have much more experience in TV than I have (not hard to beat since I had none before this.) And they humbled themselves to pull in my direction, even when they sometimes had no idea where we were all headed. I appreciate all of their support. I will never forget it.

LeBron James & Kevin Hart to Play Brothers in Upcoming Film “Ballers”

(Via Deadline)

 Lebron James Kevin Hart Ballers

Kevin Hart is signing on to star with LeBron James in Ballers, the basketball comedy for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Brian Grazer and Michael Rosenberg are producing.

Hart will first co-write the comedy along with his scripting teammates Joey Wells, Chris Spencer and Harry Ratchford. He’ll then star as a man who lives in the shadow of his NBA superstar brother (James), but gets a chance to prove himself when he and some pals attend a weekend fantasy basketball camp in Miami.  Hart is certainly dominant in the stand-up arena, but posting up against this screen sibling could be dangerous.

Hart is under 5’3″ while James is a towering 6’8.”

That kind of sibling size differential hasn’t been seen since Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in another Universal comedy, Twins.

They’ll sign a director when Hart and his cohorts turn in the script. The plan is to start production next summer when James has time off.
