A startling news article popped up on the PBS NewsHour site last night, saying that rapper Tupac had been found alive and well in a small resort in New Zealand living with, of all people, Biggie Smalls.
For anyone who did not already find the likelihood of this arrangement suspicious, the story was a hoax, written by hackers and taken down by IT admins about an hour after publication. But not before at least 3,000 readers “liked” the story on Facebook and many more on Twitter started buzzing about whether it was true.
The hackers, from a group calling itself LulzSec, did more than just break into PBS’ content management system, pen a sufficiently-newsy sounding article with a photo and byline, and publish it. They also posted a list of usernames and passwords for PBS’s IT admins and users, along with login details for local PBS television stations. As a bonus, they added a two deface pages to the PBS.org web site.
