One of the things that was lost when Jessica Sanchez was almost kicked off American Idol was her stirring rendition of Deborah Cox's "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here".
Cox's R&;B version was one of the best songs of the late 90's as she bared her soul to new love that she didn't think existed anymore. Add her club remix of the song became an all-time classic, and Deborah Cox succeeded in the rare feat of taking an already great and making it better, if that's even possible.
Jessica Sanchez is a vocal reminder of those long ago days of the 90's when Cox, Toni Braxton, Tamia, Mary. J Blige, Mariah Carey and still vocally vibrant Whitney Houston ruled the charts with vocal bravado. This was then last of an era when it took more than to just look and use auto-tunes to be looked upon as a great artist.
This is a not a dis to someone like Rihanna who continues to make great songs, but when you listen to Deborah Cox's "Nobody" the emotions she conveys on that record can not be found on a software package.
It's raw. It's soulful. It's what the legacy of R&B, blues and gospel music was built upon.
While Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera did there best to keep this legacy going, record companies decided to hitch their wagon to the Britney Spears and J Lo's of the world, where vocals were secondary to sexiness and cool beats.
Here's hoping that Jessica Sanchez will have the opportunity to turn back the clock.
One where where vocals are just as important or even more than how sexy you look.
