Meyers on Fallon. Photo: oyster.ignimgs.com |
There's not much that Donald Trump and agree on, but one of those things is that Seth Meyers is not that funny. While Trump thinks Meyers is not funny at all, I think Meyers is just OK.
However, when word came down that he will replace Jimmy Fallon on "Late Night", I left scratching my head.
This wasn't much of a surprise, given that the news about Meyers has been swirling since Jimmy Fallon was named "Tonight Show" host a few months ago.
My problem is why the rush to name Meyers now.
Sure, Lorne Michaels is producing "Late Night" and while he did find Conan O'Brien (who took a awhile to find his hosting legs) and Fallon (whom didn't even have support from NBC when first chosen), but why not have an open competition for the job like David Letterman's World Wide Pants production company did when Craig Kilborn left the "Late Show", which eventually was won by Craig Ferguson in 2004, after he beat out D.L. Hughley, Michael Ian Black and others for the gig.
NBC should have done the same during the the summer to have a different host each week or once a week tosee whom the audience gravitates to, (this would have also given Fallon a summer break to work on the Tonight Show ).
Another issue is why must ach NBC Late Night host since David Letterman have Saturday Night Live ties?
There are many comedians, newsy folks and entertainers known and unknown, who might be a good replacement for Fallon.
At least with an open hosting competition, African-Americans, Latins and Asians and non-SNL types would have a chance to sit behind the desk and introduce themselves to national audience , (but Michaels never had a minority as a Weekend Update host, so I guess why start now right?)
When Jimmy Fallon first took over "Late Night", the buzz wasn't even about him, but The Roots as a house band. By having Questlove, Black Thought and the Roots crew on stage every night, it added certain coolness factor to the show from the very start.
The buzz from The Roots, took some pressure off Fallon, which gave him enough time to grow into his hosting duties.
When it comes to "coolness", Seth Meyers is not the first person I think of.
But hey, I might be wrong and if I am great.
However, I will be busy laughing with Craig Ferguson on CBS to notice if Seth Meyers was the right choice or not.
* Who do you think, should have a shot being a "Late Night" host?
