Local: WJW's Stacey Frey Announces She Has Breast Cancer

Update 11/28/12
(Via WJW) It was an emotional morning at Fox 8 on Tuesday as one of our own made an important announcement. Fox 8 News in the Morning reporter Stacey Frey has been diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. Stacey said she discovered a lump a few months ago and will undergo surgery on Wednesday at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Her husband, John Kosich, and their son, Aidan, joined her to share the news. Stacey says she felt it was important to include viewers because it’s a diagnosis that most women don’t expect. “You never think it’s going to happen to you,” Stacey said. In fact, early detection is key to successful treatment of the disease. “I’m one of the lucky ones,” Stacey said. Her husband feels blessed, too. “I’ve been married to this woman for 15 years and I know of no one who has a stronger spirit. She’s a rock,” John boasted. Stacey will be absent from Fox 8 for about four to six weeks. We’ll miss her terribly, but she knows she has our support! “I know that my Fox 8 Family has been praying for me.” And, we are. Bruno Mars Performs Locked Out of Heaven & Young Wild Girls on SNL

Not since the days of Kool and the Gang and the Con-Funk-Shun ruled the stage in the early 80's, have we seen a group of R&B horn players/back-up singers totally crush a stage, but Bruno Mars and his capable band did just that on Saturday Night Live this weekend. While the energy was high on "Locked Out of Heaven", Mars slowed things down with "Young Wild Girls", which might rival "Grenade" as one of his best written songs.

Early reviews compares him to Justin Timberlake's SNL stints, but to be fair, Mars carved out his own comedic niche that almost good as his music abilities.

Three Thoughts on: Nashville, Jersey Shore and Anna Chulmsky

I'm starting a new thing this week, where I give my random thoughts on the world of popular culture.

I snagged this idea from the Cleveland "Queen of Media" Leah Haslage, Life with Leah blog, so I hope she doesn't sue me for co-opting her weekly segment, but I'm sure she'll forgive me...I hope.

 Alright let's get started!

 1.) I really dig.....ABC's new show Nashville.

Don't be put off if you are not  country fan because the soapy "Nashville" is more story-driven than it is music driven.

Although the base of "Nashville" is  around country music, its core really built around on and off stage  trappings, complexities and shadiness of the music industry, (to paraphrase Allen Iverson when he was defending his unreleased rap album back in the day : "If you are into sex, greed and backstabbing this show is for you!")

Trust me, once you get into the storylines and watch the performances by Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, you will see very quickly realize that "Nashville" is  more way more "Dallas" than it is "Hee Haw."

2.) I'm shocked by.... the stellar return of Anna Chulmsky

Who knew the little girl from the 90's kid film "My Girl"  with Macaulay Culkin  would turn a jaw dropping performance playing a "50 Shades of Grey" inspired author on Law & Order SVU along with her star turn on HBO's Veep.

Chulmsky who seemingly disappeared after "My Girl" (she attended the University of Chicago, majoring in International Studies)  basically looks the same, but she has added more acting depth while not carrying  the off-screen baggage that  has befallen many child stars into adulthood.

If only we could say the same for Culkin

3.) I'm not cool with...the two hour version of Jersey Shore.

I still like Snookie, "The Sitch" and the rest of the "Jersey Shore" crew, but asking me to devote two hours each week to "Gym, Tan, Laundry" is a bit much to ask.

However, I can say the same for "X-Factor", "The Voice", "Dancing with The Stars" and other programs that are asking viewers to dedicate two-three hours each week for one show.

One of the reasons why "Survivor" and the "Amazing Race" on CBS has maintained their ratings dominance is because both  them have remained one hour formats. By doing so, they are letting their viewers know that they won't manipulate their show for sake of advertising dollars, which is basically the reason why for the bloated two hour format.

Yet in network's haste to squeeze as much money as they can out of their franchises as possible, the ratings of these two hour shows including those "Jersey Shore" series finale have begun to dip (or maybe viewers don't like the fact the cast have matured some) .

Although you can't blame the networks for making money, If  they continue to manipulate the audience, these two hour shows will quickly end up being  no-hour shows in the not so distant future.

What are your thoughts on two hour shows?

Cleveland Bus Driver Uppercuts Teen (Video)

Although the bus driver probably handled the situation wrong and probably will lose his job, the fact is that there is a lack of disrespect from younger adults.

Maybe its a lack of parenting or the removal of discipline in school, but I never heard some much rudeness and cussing from the younger generation, (this goes for sports fans too, who seem to think just because they can wear a team jersey or pay a ticket that they can act like an idiot during tailgating and inside sporting events by getting into fights and cursing like they are in a bar).

Did young lady deserved to get hit in the face?

No, but if she would have just rode the bus and respected the bus driver and people around her, this sad incident wouldn't have happened.

What do you think about the incident or the behavior of young adults/sports fans?

Update: New Video, Witness Talks "CLEVELAND — The woman punched on an RTA bus tells her side of the story only to Fox 8, and now we’re revealing the driver’s side of the story. RTA says the bus driver is on unpaid indefinite suspension. New video has surfaced showing a physical confrontation between an RTA bus driver and a passenger on Sept. 18. The new video appears to show Shidea Lane, 25, grabbing the driver, Artis Hughes, 59, during a verbal altercation."

60+ Year Old Ronnie the Limo Driver Won’t Marry His 20 Something Girlfriend

I have to give it to Howard Stern’s 63 year old “security guy”, Ronnie Mund pulling a gal more than double his age. Since Mund was married before, he’s in his right not to marry his 29 year old girlfriend Stephanie.

However, since Stephanie has been with him for five years, the former "Score’s Man" might want to think twice because not too many women in their 20’s would stick around with a guy who got his first AARP over 10 years ago.

Smart or Desperate : T.O."s Tweet to The New York Jets for Work?

Terrell Owens took social media job hunting to the next level when he contact the New York Jets for a job:
Some people are saying T.O. looks very sad tweeting for a chance to play in the NFL again, but in actuality, players and their agents do this all time. However, most of the time, this happens behind closed doors withut millions to see.

Would Owens be an asset to the 2-3 Jets?

Of course.

Terrell Owens is still in great shape and could help the Jets who are currently at disarray and are 2-3 and still the midst of the tiresome Sanchez v. Tebow debate.

However with his past repuation and advanced age, sadly the NFL might have sailed on the future Hall of Famer

What do you think of T.O’s tweet? Bold or sad?

UGK Rapper Bun B Impresses on ESPN's First Take

Back in the day when you heard a rapper talk like Chuck D, KRS One or Chubb Rock, you were pulled in by what they had to say.

However as years went by,  more and more rappers began to sound like they barely went to school at all, (how is that "is" is used for everything and how did "though" become the pronounced ending for a sentence?)

When Bun B appeared on First Take today , it reminded how rappers use to talk with eloquence and thoughtful commentary.

Given that Bun B is in his late 30's and not a kid this probably is the reason why Bun B came off going toe to toe with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. Nevertheless, his appearance created a major stir on Twitter from rap fans and non-rap fans alike.
If ESPN ever creates a Hip Hop inspired sports commentator show, Bun B should be the first one they should call. If not, the Houston native has bright career in voice over work or a public speaker.

Christina Aguilera's New Song 'Your Body' Tanks Now What?

According to Billboard Magazine, Christina Aguilera's latest song "'Your Body' peaked at number 34 on the pop chart and has fell to number 64.

Ouch?

What happened to Ms. Aguilera????

Sure she's a bit thicker than she use to be, but shouldn't be a reason for her slowed music success.

Christina still has that one thing that Rihanna,Taylor Swift and other pop divas of today lack.

A GREAT voice.

Not a good one or a bad one fixed with auto-tunes, but a a GREAT one.

Its a kind of voice that helped Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Kelly Clarkson keep their careers going, when they hit their musical bumps.

Its a kind voice that Celine Dion used to score a long standing gig in Las Vegas when she no longer topped the charts.

Its a kind of voice that Christina still has, but at times discards to make songs that are vocally beneath her.

Interestingly as Christina continues to flail,  her former TRL co-hort Pink has scored yet another hit with her song "Blow Me."

Does Pink has the same vocal range as Christina?

No, but Pink's vocals are still passionate, she chooses songs that her fans can connects to and  most importantly, she stayed true to who she is:  The tough chick with a heart of gold.

Pink didn't change to change her sound to compete with Lady Gaga or anybody else, she's still Pink.

The same goes for Christiana's vocally challenged  Mickey Mouse Club buddy Britney Spears who also has continued to make hits.

Sure she went bit loco a few years ago and still looks jittery like a church mouse when you see her on X Factor but issues aside,  Britney still chooses the right songs and remains the dance diva she was when she first started, (Anybody seen that southern belle from back then, I miss her).

But all is not lost.

Christina is still a judge on"The Voice" (unless Shakira makes people forget about her when she fills in for her during the live shows) and although "Your Body" is failure isn't a success, it doesn't mean that her new album "Lotus" will fail.

On her last lackluster album "Bionic", "You Lost Me" was a great song, but for some reason it didn't get the airplay it deserved. So you would think that "Lotus" has at least one killer "You Are Beautiful" type track on it.

However, if "Lotus" does tank, Christina Aguilera  needs to get "Dirrty" again, put her classic album "Stripped" on loop and remember the singer she used to be before she puts out another album trying to be someone else.

Deep Soulful Sounds Fuels Delta Rae 's Bottom of the River (Video)

When I came across this video for a brief few seconds on the VH1 Top 20 video countdown today, I was immediately taken by the song with its rhythmic footsteps and southern baptists vocals.

To paraphrase SNL's Stefon: "This video has everything: Thumping southern soul, a blonde wailing like Dusty Springfield and a group of African American fraternity steppers in Kabuki masks and hoodies."

I wish the video ending's cleared up the interesting beginning, but this song is so rich, you can look past the video's gaffe.

CBS News AnchorJennifer Livingston Responds to Viewer for Criticizing Her Weight

I often wonder what  TV news producers are thinking when they constantly trot out anchors who like they just came from Miss Universe.

I'm sure it's about ratings, but men like women in all shapes and sizes and women usually like women that they have something in common with; Yet it seems like more and more female anchors are hired with the same waist size as they do talent "0, (okay that's a bit harsh, let's kick it up to "2").

That's why it was so refreshing to see WKBT anchor Jennifer Livingston address the viewer who criticized her for her weight.

While its true that new organizations  has always hired beauty queen-like talent, the difference was most of them were highly skilled (Hello Diane Sawyer) and they were working along with equally talented women with various looks, shapes and sizes (Hello Candy Crowley).

It seems like ever since Fox News began and terms like "Money Honey" popped up on CNBC during the last decade, looks and top model like bodies seems to be the benchmark for news employment.

This is not say that  everyone today who is attractive is not talented, but just watch when a "Breaking News" story happens and see who rises to the occasion and those who fold because they have to improvise the news without the use of a teleprompter (this goes for the guys too....David Brinkley where are you?)

Will Jennifer Livingston's eloquent rebuttal change the tide of size "2" beauty queen anchors and reporters?

Probably not...but hopefully her reply will not only make young girls of  various shapes and sizes appreciate their bodies as well as make TV news producers think twice before turning away a female anchor or reporter because of her body shape, looks or color.

I Found Nick's R&B Song From His New Girl Mixtape

So I was watching the "Fluffer" episode of  "New Girl", when this R;B song popped on from the mixtape Nick (Jake Johnson) gave Jess (Zooey Deschanel).

I heard this cut that before in a Captain Morgan commerical, that used to air on PTI a few years ago.

Now thanks to wonderful world TuneFind, (Shazam didn't help me this time), I have my answer: "Lay You Down" by Spank, (can you really have song called "Lay Me Down" and not have artist call themselves Spank?)

Now I'm not saying this song is great in a Jodeci or Boyz II Men kind of way, but it does feel like song I would put on a mixtape during the Knocking The Boots/Freak Me of the early to mid 90's,  (#DontJudgeMe).

The only problem I have now is that I don't know if song is a goof or its actually real?

In either case, I have on loop on my MP3 player...if only there was a remix featuring Tug Romney!

(If you don't what  I mean, check out the New Girl's "Fluffer" episode online)

Ryan Seacrest Says the Nicki Minaj/Mariah Fight was "Intense"

During his radio broadcast on Wednesday,  spoke about the spat between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey during the Tuesday auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina

"It got heated between Nicki and Mariah," admitted Seacrest, who was outside the auditorium during the dust-up. "It was intense! I'll be honest with you . .. It went far last night. It did get intense."

I'm sure fellow judges Randy Jackson and Keith Urban said, no crap man!

All jokes aside, producer Nigel Lythgoe is either a genius or  driving a stake through American Idols rapidly slowing heart. He had to know that putting two divas at different stages of their career in Minaj and Carey would be bring fireworks.

Although five octave singing, multi-platinum selling Carey is way more successful than the two, Minaj doesn't seem like the type to bow down to Mrs. Cannon who probably does not have  a  lot of patience for  a relative newbie who artfully uses witty rhymes, auto tunes, multi-colored wigs and multiple personalities to build a successful career.

If these two survive the auditions and make it to January, viewership will probably go through the roof.

However, where does that leave the contestants?

Question: Would you watch American Idol next year for the judges or the contestants?

The Iran Job is a Must See Documentary

I came across the Iran Job while watching Late Night with Carson Daly and I immediately put the film on my must see list.

The documentary follows Kevin Sheppard, a basketball player from the U.S. Virgin Island as he takes his pro career to Iran in the 2008-2009 season playing for A.S. Shira.

The films not only deals ups and downs Sheppard's basketball season, but also Iranian politics, which was going through an upheaval at the time.

However, the heart of the movie is the friendship between Sheppard and three educated, thought provoking Iranian women, Hilda, Laleh, and especially Elaheh, who not only bears a striking resemblance to Kim Kardashian, but also develops feelings for Sheppard.

If The Iran Job comes to theater near you check it out, if not make sure you see it when it on demand or your local Redbox.
